Must to see

Summary

the sea bridge

Must for walks

We recommend some places to see and photograph.

The first must is undoubtedly the sea bridge. Recent and futuristic construction connects the south and north riviera with a pedestrian and cycle path.

The sea bridge offers many views overlooking the Pescara river, towards the sea with a view of the sea and overflows and towards the mountain with a view of the Majella and Gran Sasso (profile of Sleeping Beauty).

Tourist port of Pescara

You can find it immediately after the sea bridge towards the south.

It is an excellent location, well served which obviously hosts the boats of tourists and rich locals. The place is full of life but at the same time offers a pleasant and relaxing environment.

Great for walks, to eat meat or fish, enjoy a drink et.,

In the summer there is always a rich program of events that find their fulcrum in and near the tourist port.

For anyone passing by Pescara or nearby it is a must

Cascella ship

Nestled between the sea and the city center, the Nave di Cascella is the starting point for exploring Pescara.

Going inland you will immediately find Piazza della Rinascita, better known as Piazza Salotto, or the lounge of the Pescara evenings. Continuing further you will find Corso Umberto I, via Firenze and Corso Vittorio Emanuele (shopping area) on the left and on the right the goods area or the new center of Pescara nightlife.

For anyone passing by Pescara or nearby it is obviously a must

The “trabocchi”

Witnesses of a not too distant past, the trabocchi, now typical of Abruzzo (whose south coast is called the coast of the trabocchi) are beautiful to look at and often offer catering services.

If you have no way to go far right at the mouth of the Pescara river and under the famous bridge you can find intact and well preserved a row of trabocchi, once spiders always active in the draft below the coast.

For anyone passing by Pescara or nearby it is obviously a must

Must TO TASTE

Bruschetta and arrosticini

We recommend some recipes to absolutely taste while visiting Abruzzo.

The queen recipe of our short gastronomic tour is simple, at least in appearance but very good.

Obviously the best known and most typical dish from Abruzzo, that is the kebabs of sheep meat rigorously roasted on the charcoal grill.

Absolutely a must in Abruzzo, for everyone, including vegans.

Other Must to savor

The brodetto, a great classic

Virtually every self-respecting seaside resort has its own version of brodetto.

In the Pescara version, the dry sweet pepper is first browned, which is then removed and chopped to add to the top.

Another must is the choice of fish (blue fish banned). Welcome are redfish, toad, octopus, ray, lobster etc.,

In the original recipe the fish is washed in sea water and instead of the sauce there would be red vinegar.

It is cooked on a high flame on terracotta for about 15 minutes and the result is a fairly dry broth.

Il Parrozzo, the sweet of the Vate

The parrozzo (or panrozzo) is a typical Abruzzo dessert, originally from Pescara.

The parrozzo was conceived and prepared in 1920 by Luigi D’Amico, owner of a pastry shop in Pescara.

The first person Luigi D’Amico let taste the parrozzo was Gabriele d’Annunzio, who, entranced by the new dessert, wrote a madrigal “La Canzone del parrozzo”

(This new parrozzo is so good that it seems a madness of Santo Ciattè, who has put on a large oven the product of the earth worked by the ox, from the fatty and shiny earth that is cooked … and which gradually becomes sweeter than any sweet thing….)
Gabriele D’Annunzio

In reality there is still a lot that we can recommend for example among the things to taste while visiting Abruzzo we point out the pasta alla mugnaia, recipe by Elice, the virtues of Teramo, the “pecora alla callara”(sheep), the pallotte cac and ov, the scrippelle mpusse , lu cif and ciaf, spaghetti alla chitarra, sagne and fasciule (beans or alternatively chickpeas), lu timballe alla teramana (timbale), brodetto alla vastese, pizz’onde, pipindun and ov, pizz e fuje, broth with cardone, li bummalitt or ciammariche with sauce (snails), fiadoni and to go with cheeses and cold cuts the pecorino di farindola or ventricina (also in a spreadable version)

And then to talk about desserts let’s not forget, indeed we recommend, the bocconotti (from Castelfrentano), the cicerchiata, the pizza dogge (multilayer and color cake), the sise delle monache and the caggionetti. And we certainly haven’t said everything.

Must villages to discover

Torre di Cerrano

Torre Cerrano is one of the ancient coastal towers of the Kingdom of Naples, located on the Adriatic coast, in the province of Teramo, between Silvi and Pineto. It is one of the few remaining intact examples of the dense network of coastal fortifications of the Kingdom of Naples, which had the function of repelling the frequent attacks of Turks and Saracens from the sea.

Placed by the sea, it reconciles the possibility of a day at the beach in a context steeped in history. The tower and the immediate vicinity constitute a protected marine area.

Rocca Calascio

A stupendous fortress immersed in the Apennine mountains dating back to 1140 AD.

It offers a beautiful view of the surroundings and is now available for free to visitors. From it you can enjoy a broad view over the entire chain of the Gran Sasso d’Italia (Corno Grande, Pizzo Cefalone, Monte Prena, Monte Bandiera, Monte Bolza, Monte Ruzza), to the south-east the Maiella, to the south-west the Sirente-Velino; below you can recognize the underlying valleys of Navelli and Tirino and, in the distance, the Aquila basin and the Peligna basin.

Rocca Calascio has been the setting for many. The first feature film set at the Rocca is Amici mie – Atto IIº (Italy, 1982). Subsequently, it was the turn of Ladyhawke (USA, 1985) where the fortress (then not yet restored) was the refuge of the hermit personified by Leo McKern. Later, Il Viaggio della sposa (Italy, 1997) and L’orizzonte degli eventi (Italy, 2005) were set here. The fortress is also visible in some scenes of the film The American (USA, 2010) with George Clooney.

Undoubtedly a must to discover if you are on holiday in Abruzzo and have a car.

Scanno the heart-shaped lake

The lake with its characteristic heart shape as it can be seen from an observation point at the top, climbing the path of the heart, is one of the most beautiful and evocative destinations in Abruzzo.

Set in the territory of Scanno and Villalago, it offers many possibilities for fun in the waters of the lake and in the surrounding mountains.

Do not overlook the fact that the same village of Scanno, among the most beautiful in Italy, is considered the land of photographers as it has attracted important photographers who have immortalized it and now the photos are even exhibited at the MoMA in New York.

Città Sant’Angelo

Another destination among the most beautiful villages in Italy and much closer than the previous ones is undoubtedly Città Sant’Angelo.

Immersed in the hilly hinterland but a few kilometers from the sea, among vineyards and olive groves, among sunflower and crocus heads, it was classified by Forbes as one of the 10 best places in the world to live and with little money.

In reality there is still a lot to discover for example, always nearby there are the villages of Atri, Silvi alta and Montesilvano Colle itself.

Other suggestive places for history and characteristics are Civitella del Tronto, Alba Fucens and its amphitheater, the Piccolomini Castle in Celano, the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere in Fossacesia, the Roccascalegna Castle or the Ducal Castle of Crecchio or the Aragonese Castle in Ortona and also the basilica of Collemaggio or the fountain of 99 spouts both in L’Aquila.

And then let’s not forget the natural beauties, sometimes mixed with traces of history, such as the hermitages of San Bartolomeo in Legio, San Giovanni all’Orfento and Santo Spirito.

Or simply naturalistic destinations such as the Stiffe caves, the trabocchi coast, Campo Imperatore, the Orfento valley, the Sagittario gorges, the national park (which covers large areas) of both Abruzzo and Gran Sasso and the Laga mountains. or the Majella. Then there are the other lakes, namely San Domenico, Campotosto, Bomba, Penne, Barrea, Sinizzo and Pietranzoni … and for now we stop here.

The fact is that in Abruzzo there is so much to discover!
